VHF Radio, Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) Course – May 8 and 10, 2018

The VHF Radio Course, Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime), also referred to as ROC(M), is a two-evening course that will be offered this year May 8th and 10th in Parry Sound, from 6:30 to 9:00.

This complete course with CD, includes work with Digital Selective Calling. This course will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) and includes the DSC Endorsement exam which is given on the second evening.

To operate a maritime radio, you need this certificate. It is the law! This Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures, as well as everyday operating techniques.

Boating 2 Course Starting April 11, 2018

Boating 2 – Beyond Boating Basics, More than your Boating Licence

The PCOC makes sure you have immediate navigation and safety skills but it’s just the beginning of what you should know when you get on a boat. In the second of our Boating Series, you are introduced to the art of navigation, anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include towing, trailering and a check list for layup and launch.

Suggested Prerequisite: Boating 1 and/or Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

A two evening VHF instruction course with examination will be offered May 3rd and 10th, 2016, at Lakeland Long Term Care facility (beside the West Parry Sound District Hospital in Parry Sound).

The complete package with CD covers VHF marine radio  and Digital Selective Calling (DSC). The course will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) and DSC Endorsement exams that will be administered on the second night with temporary licenses issued that evening for people successfully completing the exams.

To legally operate a maritime radio as an individual or business you need this certificate. The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures as well as everyday operating techniques.

Seamanship Course Starting September 29th

The Parry Sound Power & Sail Squadron will be presenting the Seamanship course this fall starting September 29th.

Seamanship expands upon the CPS Boating Essentials course to provide the student with a more in-depth knowledge of tides, currents, wind, waves and weather.  Traditional navigation, aids to navigation, Collision Regulations, GPS fixes, running fixes, DR plot, way points, the introduction of Deviation and chart labeling in both True and Magnetic are among the many topics covered.

Circumstances such as crew-overboard, medical emergencies, and potentially life-threatening situations are discussed. You will also “learn the ropes”, by gaining proficiency related to knots, hitches, bends, and splices as you develop your Marlinspike skills.

Boating Essentials, Starting January 2015

Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron will be offering the Canadian Power Squadron course Boating Essentials starting in January 2015. Classes meet once a week at Canadore College, Wednesday evenings, from January 14th to March 11th, with no classes February 11th and 18th.

Boating Essentials

Enjoyment and safety on the water require knowledge. Boating Essentials will take you to the next level in your boating education. Technology has changed the way we navigate. However, in order to use a GPS/chartplotter effectively, you should understand the use of paper charts and coastal navigation. The topics covered in this course; magnetic compass, global positioning and charts, navigation, conning, plotting, digital charting, anchoring, lines and ropes will increase your boating knowledge and make your adventures on the water safe and enjoyable.

VHF Course – April 15th & 22nd

A last reminder and information concerning The Maritime Radio Course, for VHF radios.  If you use a marine VHF radio you must have a license. The two evening course will be held on: April 15 and 22, 2014; 6:30 to 9:00; at Lakeland Long Term Care facility.  As you go up the hill use the first hospital parking on the right.  Your parking fee will be looked after.  The door to Lakeland is locked but there will be someone there to let you in. The fee for the course is $75 and includes the cost of the exam.

We need to know as soon as possible, preferably April 7th to order the necessary course materials and provide you with the phonetic alphabet, knowledge of which is necessary to successfully pass the final examination.

ROC(M) / VHF Radio Course, April 15th and 22nd

This is a two night course being offered by the Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron. Successful completion of the course will provide you with your Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime), including the DSC qualification for the operation of a marine VHF radio.

Note that the course is a month earlier this year than last and will be held April 15th and 22nd in the evening at the Lakeland Long Term Health Care facility, 6 Albert Street in Parry Sound. This two evening course is scheduled  for May 22nd and 29th.

This course includes instruction and the course materials (complete package with CD), and covers Digital Selective Calling (DSC).  This course will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) exam. The exam is administered on the second evening. Successful completion provides you with a Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime), including DSC.

To operate a maritime radio, you need the certificate.  It is the law, and necessary if you operate a radio as part of a commercial operation. The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures, as well as everyday operating techniques.
