2025 Parry Sound Waterfront Sailpast

You are invited to join in celebrating Canada Day at the Parry Sound Waterfront!

For more than forty years, the Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron, now known as CanBoat Parry Sound, has held a sailpast of large and small power and sail vessels immediately before the Town fireworks on Canada Day. You are invited to be part of it.

It is enormous fun to take part in the sailpast because of the tremendous, enthusiastic reaction from onlookers on shore waiting for the fireworks.

If you would like to be part of the show, please email Canboatsailpast@gmail.com   to let us know your name, vessel name and length overall.

Details: on Tuesday July 1, CANADA DAY,

1. string up a few extra or coloured lights on your boat, leave them turned OFF

2. put on your life jacket and navigation lights

3. meet us “offstage”, south of Rosetta Island at 8:30PM (2030) to form up

4. monitor channel 16 but tune to VHF Channel 6, for parade coordination from  BLUE PEARL, Fleet Captain Larry Woolner

5. come onstage— in view of the town dock — and LIGHT UP your vessel

6. parade in line astern behind the Police boat and Blue Pearl, along the route which goes near the river mouth and slowly along the length of the town dock.

7. enjoy the tumultuous applause!

8. go out in the Sound, to be seen by Belvedere Heights residents, or return to your dock, to watch the fireworks at 10 PM (2200) Please follow VHF directions to ensure the Island Queen has clear passage to return to the dock.

It is a spectacular evening and you can be an important part of it.

VHF Radio, Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) Course – May 8 and 10, 2018

The VHF Radio Course, Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime), also referred to as ROC(M), is a two-evening course that will be offered this year May 8th and 10th in Parry Sound, from 6:30 to 9:00.

This complete course with CD, includes work with Digital Selective Calling. This course will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) and includes the DSC Endorsement exam which is given on the second evening.

To operate a maritime radio, you need this certificate. It is the law! This Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures, as well as everyday operating techniques.

Cost: Members of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron $80.00; non-members $90.00. To register, call John Stothers 705-389-1345.

Boating 2 Course Starting April 11, 2018

Boating 2 – Beyond Boating Basics, More than your Boating Licence

The PCOC makes sure you have immediate navigation and safety skills but it’s just the beginning of what you should know when you get on a boat. In the second of our Boating Series, you are introduced to the art of navigation, anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include towing, trailering and a check list for layup and launch.

Suggested Prerequisite: Boating 1 and/or Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

Annual General Meeting Scheduled for April 22, 2017

The Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron Annual General Meeting will be held at the Museum on Tower Hill in Parry Sound on April 22, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. There will be more information as the meeting date approaches. We can be reached at info@parrysoundboating.ca.

New Geocache Designs Being Implemented

The GeoBayCaching program we introduced a couple of years ago is undergoing an update and refresh. We have discovered that the cache containers we originally used were being abused by the locals, bears in at least one case, or decomposing as a result of the elements.

The new geocaches are now being built with commercial grade 4″ PVC pipe and fittings. They should stand up to the elements. We’ve added a red band to the caches that capture the sense of our local Red Rock Island Lighthouse.

Three of the new geocaches have been deployed by Commander John Mason in the past week. The new geocaches are located on The Pancakes, Franklin Island and Windsor Island. The idea of the GeoBayCache program is to encourage people to get out and explore, not play hide-and-seek. The locations of most of the geocaches are sufficiently out-of-the-way that there is no need to ‘hide’ them once you get close.

If you get out to a location and can’t find the geocache, please let us know (communications@parrysoundboating.ca). Here’s hoping that the geocaches don’t become collector items.

Celebrate Christmas in July in Parry Sound

Canada will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. As we approach that special birthday, Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron, invites boaters to prepare now.

Celebrate the First of July (149) by joining our Christmas in July Sail Past. Decorate your power boat like a lighted Christmas present or your sailboat like a Christmas tree and join us. You don’t have to be a member of CPS to participate, just have a boat.

Decorate your boat and join us behind Rosetta Island at 9:15 on July 1 – Canada Day.

2016 Annual General Meeting Summary

The Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron hosted the Voyageur District Power and Sail Squadron annual general meeting in Parry Sound this past weekend. A reception was held at the Parry Sound Area Museum on Tower Hill Friday evening, followed by the Voyageur District AGM Saturday morning at the Charles W. Stockey Centre. The Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron AGM was held Saturday afternoon.

The following Officers were elected to the Bridge of the Parry Sound Power and Sail Squadron for 2106-2017:

  • Horst Mattern – Administration and Environment officer
  • Lois Ritchie – Membership Officer

Looks Like August, Feels Like April

We’re now about about two months away from the Summer Solstice, and it looks like late August with the chill of April. Makes sense of course, as the sun is exactly where it would be in late August. The differences range from the water temperature (brrr!), to the absence of leaves on the trees. It will be nice to be on the water when it’s warmer, but don’t tarry. The boating season is too short not to be enjoying an August sun in April. This is a view of Parry Sound’s Big Sound from the Rotary Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail with Two Mile Point to the left.
